School pupils and parents make big splash at Chester Half Marathon

A team of 30 volunteers from The King’s Junior School, including teachers, pupils, and parents, took charge of Drinks Station 4 in Mollington after stepping up to help at short notice.

The group arrived on site at 6.45am and spent more than five hours handing out refreshments and cheering on the 7,000 runners taking part in the race.

David O’Neil, a Year 6 teacher who led the team, said: “Our station was impossible to miss thanks to our creative signs, motivating musical playlist, enthusiastic cheering – and not forgetting our tambourine banging.

“The sense of community was incredible and this memory of supporting the local mass event – and the amazing charity runners – will be something that our children remember for a long time to come.”

He also mentioned the extra motivation they provided for familiar faces taking part in the race.

Mr O’Neil said: “We also enjoyed seeing some of our own teachers running the Half Marathon and I don’t want to say that our support helped them to their best times, but I’m sure it helped.”

Although the volunteers finished the day with tired feet and lost voices, they left with goodie bags, crew t-shirts and a real sense of accomplishment.

Well done to everyone who represented King’s on the course this year; they are already looking forward to doing it all again in 2027.
