The Straw Hat teamed up with the community to raise £8,529 through the event, part of a wider campaign to support Kole Pearson, who has been diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome.
The rare genetic disorder, often described as childhood dementia, has led Kole’s family to launch an approximately £2.9 million appeal for specialist gene therapy treatment in the United States.
The sponsored walk, named Little Rick’s BIG Walk 4 Kole, was organised by Ellesmere Port resident Ricky Powelly and saw more than 50 participants trek from Ellesmere Port to Anfield stadium.
Craig Aslatt, operator of The Straw Hat, said: “It was a brilliant day and I’m so proud that we could be part of it.
“I won’t lie, there was a point halfway through when getting an Uber sounded very tempting.
“We were definitely feeling it for a few days afterwards, but it was all worth it.
“Seeing everyone come together for Kole was really special.
“People were helping each other throughout the walk and making sure nobody was left behind.
“To raise over £8,500 is fantastic and it just shows how much people in Ellesmere Port care about supporting one another.”
Walkers faced heavy rain near the end of the route, but supporters pitched in to carry children, push buggies and help with bikes to ensure everyone finished.
The walk forms part of a wider fundraising campaign in Ellesmere Port, including a charity car challenge to Benidorm that raised an additional £19,000.
The Straw Hat now plans to continue its fundraising efforts in partnership with neighbouring pubs The Gunners, The Horse and Jockey and community group PORT Hikes Cic.
Plans for more events are already underway for early next year.
Mr Aslatt said: “The support for Kole and his family has been incredible, and we’re determined to keep doing whatever we can to help.
“We’ve got some exciting plans for next year and we’ll be working closely with the other pubs and local groups to make them happen.
“We’re lucky to have such a supportive community around us and hopefully we can continue making a real difference.”
