Abbey Gate School lodges plans for traffic barrier at Saighton site

Abbey Gate College, Saighton Grange, has launched proposals for the barrier which will be erected on the school’s main drive and controlled from the school’s reception.

As part of school’s main building is Grade II listed, planning permission must be sought to add the structure to its curtilage.

A design and access statement from Abbey Gate College reads: “The site of Abbey Gate College is a senior school, we also have an infant and Junior school in the adjacent village of Aldford, the I&J pupils are regular visitors to the senior school site at Saighton Grange.

“We can have up to 500 pupils across both sites with approximately 400 of them being in the Saighton Site, ages range from 4 years to 18 years.

“The Saighton school site is an open site, we are unable to ring fence the whole school due to it being surrounded by farms and farm land.

“However, the main entrance to the site is through our main gateway and driveway.

“We have a lockable gate for when site is closed but what we don’t have is any way of stopping unwanted traffic entering site during school hours.

“So for safeguarding reasons we would like to install a rise and fall barrier that can be controlled by our reception.

“This will allow us to stop all traffic entering school and ensuring we don’t have any unwanted visitors to site, this is particularly important during the school day when all our pupils are onsite.

“The barrier will be within the school grounds and not visible from the road, the barrier will not be connected to the school building it will be free standing on the driveway, but within the curtilage of our Grade 2 listed section of the Grange Building within the school.”

The Grosvenor Estate, who lease the site and property to Abbey Gate College, have agreed to the installation, with Cheshire West and Chester Council’s planning department set to review the application.
