University of Chester student set for bright future in education

Tianjiao Xiang, originally from Jingmen, Hubei, China, is about to graduate from the MA Education, Society and Globalisation programme with a distinction.

This success comes after she started her academic journey in the UK with a BA in Popular Music Performance.

She impressed her tutors by achieving high marks in all modules, with a particular focus on her dissertation about the importance of embedding creativity in higher education pedagogy.

Ms Xiang also excelled in her presentation skills, delivering digital talks on the impact of authoritarian parenting styles in China and the effect of dyslexia on young children’s holistic wellbeing.

Dr Paula Hamilton, programme leader for MA Education, Society and Globalisation, said: “It has been amazing to watch Ms Xiang grow in confidence over the last year.

“When she joined the MA she was reluctant to engage in discussions and assignment writing as she doubted her English language and writing skills.

“However, that was quickly overcome and Tianjiao became one of the main contributors during classroom discussion.

“Her digital presentations were of such a high standard that they are now being used as exemplars for other students.”

Reflecting on her educational journey, Ms Xiang said: “I truly appreciate how the MA programme encouraged me to think critically and deeply about education and my future career.

“Initially, I believed educational studies were solely about learning how to become a better educator.

“However, throughout my studies, I discovered that educational studies encompass a wide range of areas within social science.

“These include the relationships between education and socio-political factors, laws and policies, equality, mental wellbeing, cultural differences, and so much more. ”

She added: “The fascinating content offered with the MA programme has provided me with an in-depth understanding of the current educational framework, while also equipping me with the ability to critically evaluate challenges and identify opportunities for meaningful transformation.

“I now see education as a powerful tool for driving societal development.”

The programme Xiang to explore topics she was passionate about through research, strengthening her analytical and problem-solving skills.

She said: “The MA programme has been instrumental in my personal and professional development.

“It allowed me to explore topics I am passionate about through research, which was not only deeply rewarding but also strengthened my analytical and problem-solving skills.”

Looking towards the future, Ms Xiang aspires to become an educator in the field of music, combining her passion for music with her dedication to education.

She said: “My goal is to create a learning environment where education is not just about acquiring knowledge but about inspiring creativity, fostering personal growth, and empowering students to think critically and independently.”
