This year’s Summer Reading Challenge, themed ‘Read to the Beat’, launches in libraries across Cheshire West and Chester on July 4 and runs throughout the school holidays.
The theme celebrates music and storytelling, encouraging children to explore the connection between books and sound.
Maria Byrne, director of environment and communities at Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “I know how much children across our borough look forward to the Summer Reading Challenge each year, and ‘Read to the Beat’ is a brilliant theme to get even more young people involved.
“Reading and music both have the power to inspire, build confidence and bring people together.
“This year’s Challenge is a fantastic way for children to stay engaged, have fun and discover new interests over the summer holidays.”
Children are encouraged to read six books or set a personal reading target, with a wide selection of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and graphic novels available in libraries, as eBooks or eAudiobooks.
Those who complete the challenge will receive a certificate and a medal.
Libraries will also host events, crafts, and story sessions throughout the summer.
Children aged four to 12 can sign up at their local library or online from ‘Sign-Up Saturday’ on July 4 and will receive a special starter pack to begin their reading journey.
A Mini Challenge is also available for children under four.
The Summer Reading Challenge, which began in 1999, supports children’s literacy by helping to prevent the ‘summer reading dip’ that can occur while schools are closed.
Last year, 4,699 children in the borough took part, collectively reading 113,191 books.
Older children, aged 11 to 17, can participate in the new ‘Teens Read Two’ challenge, which builds on the success of ‘Adults Read Two’.
Teen participants are asked to read and review two books for a chance to win a £50 book voucher in a prize draw.
For younger children and teens, the ‘Read to the Beat’ programme aims to keep minds active, engaged, and entertained throughout the summer.
